I used to think a real clean meant a cabinet full of stuff. HDX vinegar: for hard water, anywhere it shows up
Regular vinegar from your pantry is diluted for cooking, not cleaning. HDX cleaning vinegar is concentrated well past grocery store strength, which makes it so much more effective to break down mineral buildup instead of just sitting on top of it and drying there. I used it on my shower glass first, where the limescale was worst, then on the hard water ring around the toilet.

Once I saw it work in two spots in one room, I started looking for hard water anywhere else in the house. It’s also great on showerheads, soaked in a bag overnight, on coffee maker reservoirs run through a rinse cycle, and on stovetops and range hoods where grease and hard water spots build up together. And because it’s just vinegar, it’s one of the few things on this list I use without gloves or a second thought about what’s touching my skin or my counters.
Ecolab grout cleaner: safe enough to use often
Most grout cleaners are acidic, which means every time you use one, you’re also wearing down the grout a little more. This grout cleaner isn’t, so it’s made for regular use instead of an occasional emergency deep clean. That’s the real reason it made the list. A product you’re afraid to use often doesn’t earn its keep in the closet.
Apply the grout cleaner directly to grout lines, then scrub & let sit for 5 minutes, then wipe clean!
I started with my shower floor tile (and had some extra help with my Ryobi scrub tool), and then used it on the shower walls too, which have only been cleaned with general purpose cleaner since being installed. Everything is sparkling like new!
If I still had a tile backsplash in the kitchen, this would be perfect for the backsplash grout too, because that’s a spot that gets grimy fast but usually gets ignored because people worry about damaging it. If you’ve got tile anywhere in an entryway or mudroom, it works there too.
The Crocodile Cloth: a scrub brush and a towel in one
This crocodile cloth does two jobs most people use two separate tools for. It scrubs on one side and buffs dry on the other, so instead of scrubbing with a sponge and then hunting down a towel, you flip the same cloth over. I used it to scrub my cast iron tub, then buffed the water spots off my mirrors right after. This is the pairing I trust on the surfaces I’m most protective of: my polished nickel faucets and my walnut bathroom vanity, because it’s plant-based with no synthetic ingredients. That matters on wood and metal finishes especially, since a lot of general cleaners can etch or dull them without you realizing it until the damage is done.
Because it’s a genuine all-purpose cleaner and not just a bathroom product, I use the Harris Peppermint Cleaner on kitchen counters, light switches, doorknobs, the outside of the fridge, and to mop the tile floors. If you’re trying to move toward more non-toxic products without giving up something that smells good and cleans well, this is the easiest swap on the list.

I paired these HDX sponges with the Peppermint cleaner on my polished nickel faucets because it gives enough scrubbing power without the risk of a scratch you can’t undo on a surface like that. A lot of sponges look soft but still leave fine marks on anything polished or glossy.
